Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy E-mail

Calligraphy, the writing of characters, is one of the highest forms of Chinese art, and is admired and displayed in museums just as paintings are.  it has maintained a close relationship with Chinese cultural development.

Chinese calligraphy serves the purpose of conveying thought but also shows the 'abstract' beauty of the line. Rhythm, line, and structure are perfectly embodied in calligraphy.

In Western arts, architecture and sculpture are the basis of the other formative arts. In China, however, calligraphy and painting are leaders of the other art forms. Ancient Chinese sculpture and architecture was influenced by the theory and rules of Chinese calligraphy. The development of Chinese handicrafts and folk arts, too, has been influenced by calligraphy to some extent.
